Stayrook Places Third in Tucson

Jess Stayrook of San Diego finished third in the Tucson Open bowling tournament Saturday.

After beating Walter Ray Williams 250-211 and Dave Ferraro 224-214, Stayrook was ousted by eventual champion Norm Duke of Albuquerque, N.M.

Duke had to overcome a pair of poor starts to win. He first beat Stayrook, 216-190, after failing to mark in the first two frames.

Stayrook earned $7,000.

BASKETBALL

The San Diego Police Athletic League’s select 12-and-under team opened the National Junior Olympics, being held in Cincinnati, with a loss to the Tennessee Trojans, 60-30.

The Trojans won the silver medal last year as an 11-and-under team.

The San Diego PAL team was led by Jamie Brossard of Pacific Beach. She scored 11 points. Richelle Perkins of Chula Vista scored seven before fouling out.

Today the SDPAL team plays Vermont, which suffered an 89-16 loss to the Indiana state champions.
