Japan Auto Production Drops: Japanese motor vehicle production totaled 6.56 million in the first six months of this year, down 1.4% from the same period last year, the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Assn. said. It was the first time since 1987 that production for the first half of a year dropped from the previous year’s level. Exports fell 2% to 2.85 million vehicles. The drop accelerated in June, when production of cars, trucks and buses fell 7.9% to 1.08 million vehicles. Demand has fallen in Japan as the economy has cooled, interest rates have moved generally higher and tough new parking regulations have been imposed with fines of up to $1,450.
