CALIFORNIA IN BRIEF : SACRAMENTO : Brown Sues to Have Census Adjusted
Assembly Speaker Willie Brown (D-San Francisco) announced Thursday the filing of a lawsuit asking the U.S. Department of Commerce to provide adjusted census data in time for the reapportionment of legislative districts for the 1992 elections. The filing comes in the aftermath of last week’s announcement by Commerce Secretary Robert A. Mossbacher Jr. that 1990 census numbers would not be adjusted, despite an acknowledged undercount of more than 5 million Americans--of whom more than 1 million reside in California. If adjusted census figures were used, California would gain eight, rather than seven, congressional seats, and be given more federal money that is distributed on the basis of population.
