From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Prisoners returned to their jobs at the Louisiana State Penitentiary, ending a strike that began over an order to build a deathbed for use when killers are executed by lethal injection. Warden John Whitley admitted it was a bad idea to order inmates in the metal shop to construct the death house gurney. He said instead a contractor will be hired before lethal injection replaces the electric chair in Louisiana on Sept. 15. Officials said about 400 of 5,200 inmates were on strike. They faced extended isolation and loss of canteen privileges.
