Tax Snacks, Not Necessities

Share

I am a student at San Diego State University attending a summer school class at Moorpark College. After reading the article entitled “Tax Bite’s Sour Aftertaste,” July 23, the only word that came to mind was “biased.”

I am aware that the raised taxes on snack foods will affect the poor, but they are not a necessity to survive. Wouldn’t you rather see a tax on candy than on the basic essentials? I am sure the poor would.

This $14.3-billion deficit is affecting the whole state, not just the poor. At San Diego State, almost 600 classes were cut and some of the best part-time professors were laid off. So, our education was cut and our tuition increased. With the limited number of classes and the overabundance of students, it will take five to six years to obtain a four-year degree. I know my family cannot support me that long, and I cannot support myself.

I am not saying the poor are not an issue. But those in the middle class, the upper-middle class and other economic backgrounds are an issue too.
