Dr. Harry Brown; Retired Anesthesiologist

Dr. Harry Brown, who had served as an anesthesiologist at Glendale Memorial Hospital for 33 years, has died at his Glendale home. He was 80.

Brown died Wednesday of complications of a neurological disease, said his daughter, Debbie Hinckley of Glendale.

Born in Glenloch, Pa., Brown earned a bachelor’s degree from Temple University in Philadelphia and graduated from its medical school in 1938. He performed his residency training at the University of Pennsylvania before serving as an anesthesiologist in the U.S. Army from 1940 to 1945. After he was discharged, Brown came to California and settled in Glendale.

At Glendale Memorial Hospital, he was on staff from 1948 until his retirement in 1981, and had served as chief of staff in 1959. He also served at various times at Hospital of the Good Samaritan, California Hospital, St. Vincent Medical Center, St. John’s Hospital and Glendale Adventist Medical Center.

Brown was a member of the American Assn. of Anesthesiologists, California Society of Anesthesiologists and the Los Angeles County Medical Assn. In the late 1960s, he was leader of a Boy Scouts Medical Explorers Post in Glendale.

In addition to his daughter, Debbie, Brown is survived by his wife of 56 years, Mildred Brown; son, David Brown of Del Mar, Calif.; brother, Hymen Brown of Downingtown, Pa.; sister, Florence Rheuban of Downingtown, and four grandchildren.

A memorial service is planned at 1 p.m. Monday at Kiefer & Eyerick Mortuary, 314 East Harvard St. in Glendale, which is handling the arrangements. Donations can be made in Brown’s name to the Glendale Memorial Health Foundation for the new surgery pavilion at the hospital.
