Bonny calls the Sunset League “the best in girls’ basketball,” and is apprehensive about the upcoming season. Although the Vikings are the defending champions, Marina lost nine seniors including two all-county players, Gillian Bean and Colleen Hatch. Only one starter and five lettermen return. “This is the least-prepared team I’ve had heading into a season opener,” Bonny said. “But at least our defensive play is there.” Bonny’s teams have been scrappy, hustling teams, relying on speed and quickness to play tough pressure defense. “We could finish anywhere from first to fifth, but I said that last year and we went 12-0, so who knows?” Bonny said. Bonny’s one returning starter is Trippet, the 5-foot-11 forward who averaged eight points and eight rebounds last season. Periolat averaged eight points and two assists coming off the bench last season, and also led the Vikings with 15 three-pointers. Marina’s newcomers include Orosco, the most valuable player from the junior varsity team that finished 22-0 last season. Sophomores Nakamura and Emde also join the varsity after a season with the JV. “All three will be playing in the big games and they know how to win,” Bonny said.
