Gay Rights Initiatives on Jobs, Housing to Be Circulated
Backers of two ballot initiatives aimed at barring job and housing discrimination against homosexuals were given permission Thursday to collect signatures to place the measures on the November, 1992, ballot.
Both proposals stem from Republican Gov. Pete Wilson’s veto in October of AB 101, which would have blocked employers from discriminating against gays and lesbians on the basis of sexual orientation.
The proposed initiatives, approved for circulation by the secretary of state’s office, are the result of strategy meetings by gay rights groups in Los Angeles and San Francisco.
To qualify for the November ballot, each proposed initiative must receive 384,974 signatures of registered voters and be submitted to elections officials by May 4, the secretary of state’s office said.
