Irvine Resident Wins Career-Woman Title

Becki McCafferty of Irvine has been named Young Career Woman of the Year by the Saddleback Valley Business and Professional Women’s Organization of Orange County.

McCafferty, a paraplegic, will represent the group in a statewide career-woman competition next year. She is a UCLA graduate with a degree in kinesiology and won the title of Ms. Wheelchair California in 1989.

She serves on the board of directors of the Dayle McIntosh Center for Independent Living and the Orange County Commission for Employment of Persons with Disabilities.

Cheryll Carpenter of Santa Ana, a court-reporting student at Cypress College, has been awarded a $500 scholarship by the Cypress College Scholarship Foundation and a $100 scholarship by the Court Reporting Club.

Anaheim resident Connie Conder, also a court-reporting student, was presented a $250 scholarship from the Orange County Legal Secretaries Assn. and a $750 grant from the California Legal Secretaries Assn.

Ardith Richey, a senior secretary, was named Classified Staff Member of the Year at Orange Coast College, and assistant professor of mathematics Wayne H. Wolfe was named Faculty Member of the Year.

Richey, who holds a liberal arts degree from Cal State Fullerton, has been with OCC since 1980. She was selected for the award over five other nominees.

Wolfe, 50, has been an OCC faculty member for 21 years and was selected for his award over seven other professors by the college’s Academic Senate.

Sarah Rettinger, a senior at Foothill High School in Santa Ana who has spearheaded the Red Cross Holiday Project for toy and food collection for two years, has received the Orange County National Philanthropy Award in the youth category.

New volunteer-tutor graduates of the South Coast Literacy Council’s English to Speakers of Other Languages program are Marilyn Marcus and Nancy Nemeth of Dana Point; Irene Kouschnik and Laura Stephens of El Toro; Barbara Stroup, David Slater and Terri McClinton of Laguna Beach; Margaret Nygaard of Laguna Niguel; Katie Helton, Scotty Nicol and Annie Moore of Mission Viejo; Gretchen Lee of Monarch Beach, and Char Salkin and Natalie Trujillo of San Clemente.

Michael Page, an eighth-grader at Niguel Hills Junior High in Laguna Niguel, won first place in the Capistrano Unified School District’s annual junior high/middle school spelling contest.

Named in the 1992 edition of “Who’s Who Among Students in American Junior Colleges” are Cypress College students William B. Benkey of Seal Beach; Tim R. Berry of Huntington Beach; Tanya Cohen of Los Alamitos; Belinda J. Flournoy, Olga Flournoy, Rachel Pearson, Debbie Holmes, Giao Pham, Samer M. Sabbara and Channa G. Samynathan of Anaheim; Lillian M. Lord and Carmen Poloni of Cypress; Angela MacGregor and Tina Rubin of La Palma; Shari Moore of Hawaiian Gardens; Leonard Perez of Norwalk, and Danita Peoples of Buena Park.

The 75 toys collected by the Orange County Council of the American Electronics Assn. will be distributed to patients at Children’s Hospital of Orange County during the Christmas season, according to Doug Leffin, toy drive chairman.
