PRAIA, Cape Verde —
The ruling Movement for Democracy party celebrated Monday after triumphing in the first free local elections in the West African archipelago of Cape Verde.
Officials results showed that the party won 10 of the 14 municipalities in Sunday’s elections.
Cape Verde was the first of Portugal’s five former African colonies to abandon Marxist single-party states set up at independence in the 1970s.
