In March, the Santa Clarita City Council passed a 10 p.m. curfew for anyone younger than 18. Police said teen-agers had been making too much noise, prompting on weekend nights an average of four calls an hour from irate residents.

Nine months later, police report that the curfew has reduced the number of calls.

“It has made our job a lot easier,” said Lt. Don Rodriguez of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. “I believe the kids are aware of it, and they are complying.”

Rodriguez said no juveniles have been arrested for violating the curfew.

“We haven’t even needed to mention it to them,” he added.

When the curfew was being considered, teen-agers complained that there weren’t many social alternatives in Santa Clarita.

“We need somewhere where you could socialize in a restaurant and not hang outside in a parking lot,” Lori Day, 15, said in May. “You know, someplace where you wouldn’t get booted out for not eating something.”
