Share

Oxnard police recovered the stolen car of a 90-year-old retired elementary school teacher a little more than a day after she reported it missing, authorities said.

About 10 p.m. Friday, Florence Johnston reported her 1987 Oldsmobile Cutlass stolen from in front of her house in the 200 block of Ash Street, police said.

“I told the police officer that I had an appointment next week to renew my driver’s license, and I was worried that I wouldn’t get it back in time,” Johnston said.

Officer Scott Whitney, who took the report, spotted the car about 3 a.m. Sunday while he was patrolling the area of Cloyne Street and La Canada Avenue, police said.

He pulled the car over and arrested two male juveniles on suspicion of car theft, police said.

An Oxnard police news release said Johnston called Whitney her “guardian angel.” But Johnston said, “I didn’t call him that. I called him ‘my hero.’ ”
