Sen. Roberti Leaning Toward Running in Robbins’ District
Senate leader David A. Roberti (D-Los Angeles), who was left with only a piece of his home district by the state Supreme Court’s reapportionment ruling, indicated Tuesday that he will probably seek the San Fernando Valley seat of former Sen. Alan Robbins.
“I’m leaning in that direction,” said Roberti, whose home is in Los Feliz.
His statement Tuesday was the firmest he has made publicly that he probably would run in a special election to fill the remaining two years of Robbins’ unexpired term. Robbins resigned from the Senate in November before pleading guilty to corruption charges.
Attorneys have told Roberti that under the term limits of Proposition 140, he could not seek another full term in the Senate if he won the two-year seat.
Roberti, president pro tem of the Senate for 12 years, also has considered the nearby districts of fellow Democratic Sen. Herschel Rosenthal of Los Angeles and veteran Republican Sen. Newton Russell of Glendale as possible new home bases.
