Countywide : Ojai Man Convicted in Insurance Scam
A former insurance salesman was convicted of stealing $98,646 from customers, authorities said Friday.
Warren Korman, 47, of Ojai was found guilty of stealing from six rental agencies and construction companies that did business with Willis & Griffith Insurance in Ventura, where he had worked as an insurance agent since 1986, said Deputy Dist. Atty. Jeff Bennett.
From June, 1987, through March, 1990, Korman persuaded clients from six of his accounts with Willis & Griffith to make checks out to him or the insurance company, even though their premiums were already paid, Bennett said.
Korman spent the money on personal expenses, including house and car payments and other debts, Bennett said.
The thefts were discovered in April, 1990, when a client called the company to ask about a missing insurance document. Korman was then fired.
