OUTLOOK

Buena Park was undisciplined and had won only five games in three seasons when Meggison arrived in 1990. Meggison, whose only previous experience was coaching slow pitch softball and Little Leagues, led Buena Park to 11 victories in his first season and nine last year. With eight returning varsity players, Buena Park is a bona fide contender for a playoff berth this season and could possibly follow the lead of its championship football and basketball teams. Barrios, a three-year starting outfielder, is the team leader. He batted .305 as a junior but is noted for his defensive skills. Meggison has two capable starting pitchers--Kimball and Garcia--who are a contrast in styles. Kimball is a power pitcher with a good fastball, and Garcia relies on control and offspeed pitches to keep batters guessing. Richard Cabral, who had 16 stolen bases as a junior, is one of the fastest players in the league; he stole second, third and home in a league game against Sunny Hills last year. If Buena Park has a weakness, it’s a lack of power. The Coyotes will rely on pitching, speed and defense. Buena Park opens with a doubleheader against Santiago, the Garden Grove League favorite, on March 7.
