Coastal Bird Count--The results are in for the Christmas bird count done in the coastal areas of the county. The local effort was sponsored by the Sea & Sage chapter of the National Audubon Society.
A total of 171 species and 51,356 individual birds were sighted. Here are the five most sighted species and the region in which the most sightings were recorded:
* Western sandpipers, 5,854 individuals counted. They were seen most often on the west side of Upper Newport Bay and the Costa Mesa area.
* Ring-billed gulls, 4,634. Most common site for these birds was Mile Square Park in Fountain Valley.
* European starlings, 3,642. The birds were seen the most in Huntington Central Park and its surrounding area.
* California gulls, 2,426. The east side of Upper Newport Bay was where these birds were found the most.
* American coot, 2,136. Hundreds of these birds were spotted in almost every section of the coastal count, but Mile Square Park had an edge over the other areas.
