STATE OF MIND

Nautilus, free weights, aerobics--they’re all for naught if your planets are in the wrong house. So says Siri Dharma Galliano, Astroyoga trainer to, and of, the stars. “The first thing I do is look at a person’s sign,” says Galliano, whose clients include Jessica Lange, Glenn Close and Louis Gossett Jr. “Then I check the astrological aspects of the Earth, new moon, full moon, solstice and equinox. I find out when the planets are lined up in favorable or unfavorable aspects.” Armed with this information, she gives her clients an exercise program. Galliano, 37, became a yoga teacher (taking the name Siri Dharma, which means “Princess on the Path to Infinity”) when she was 21 and developed Astroyoga four years ago. It quickly took off.

“Many times, people try fitness routines that don’t fit their natures,” she says. “I use astrology and apply their nature to the planets and the Earth’s season and get the quickest results. “

Each sign, she says, has one area that absorbs the most tension and becomes a medical hot spot. These areas need special attention during a workout if the mind and body are to remain in balance. Some of Galliano’s suggestions:

Aries (the head). She recommends exercises for the eyes and jaws.

Taurus (thyroid gland). Throat and neck exercises.

Gemini (lungs, hands and nervous system). “You have to slow things down for the quick-minded Gemini.”

Cancer (stomach). Sitting Sufi circles, belly grind.

Leo (heart). Squats, frog poses, propeller arms. “Leos work better alone; they need a lot of space.”

Virgo (intestines). Windmill exercises, shoulder stands, alternate leg lifts.

Libra (kidneys). Side bends, jogging with alternate knee lifts and forward- and backbends. “Libras prefer to work out with a partner.”

Scorpio (genitals). Swimming, stretching exercises, and shoulder rolls. “If all else fails, I recommend sex.”

Sagittarius (thighs). Lots of leg work, karate, horseback riding. “Needs to express physical strength.”

Capricorn (knees). “Just give them a mountain to climb.”

Aquarius (calves). Ice skating or running.

Pisces (feet). Walking or hiking.

“People stick with Astro-yoga because it’s a personalized diet and based on their rhythm with the planet,” Galliano says.
