Pepperdine Opens by Signing Two
Pepperdine’s Tom Asbury was the busiest local basketball coach Wednesday, the first day of the spring signing period.
Asbury, whose team is coming off its second consecutive NCAA tournament appearance, signed guards Trenton Jackson of Santa Monica High and Bryan Parker of Edmonds (Wash.) Junior College and said he has three scholarships remaining.
“I’m not sure I’ll be able to fill all three spots,” Asbury said, “but I sure would like to get at least two more. We need some big guys on the line.”
The spring signing period continues for the next month. Many of the top players commit during the early signing period in November.
UCLA and USC failed to sign any players Wednesday, but Trojan Coach George Raveling is actively recruiting a point guard. Brandon Titus of Cerritos Gahr is among those being considered, along with several junior college prospects.
Raveling will have two scholarships available if Harold Miner makes himself available for June’s NBA draft.
Although UCLA has three remaining scholarships, Coach Jim Harrick apparently will hold them for next year.
