Backers of congressional term limits say they have collected enough signatures for a November ballot initiative that would limit House service to six years and Senate time to 12 years.

The California Committee to Limit Terms said that as of Thursday it had collected 600,000 signatures and turned them over to the secretary of state’s office for verification. To qualify the initiative, it needs 385,000 valid signatures.

Ted Costa, head of the group, said the measure was inspired in part by the passage in 1990 of Proposition 140, which limits state Assembly members to six years in office and state senators to eight years.
