Cerritos : Veteran Councilman Wong Will Be Honored at Dinner

Share

The city of Cerritos will honor veteran Councilman Daniel K. Wong at a dinner at 6:30 p.m. May 8 at the Sheraton Cerritos Hotel. Wong, who first won a council seat in a special election in August, 1978, stepped down last week. He was unable to seek reelection because of the city’s law limiting council members to two consecutive terms.

A physician noted for joking and spinning puns at the council table, Wong was a two-time mayor. He was involved in developing the Cerritos Olympic Swim Center and launching the Neighborhood Watch program. Wong gained notoriety in 1989 when he visited Chinese leaders a month after the Tian An Men Square massacre. Critics said he had been used as a mouthpiece by the hard-line regime, but Wong defended his mission, saying he criticized Premier Li Peng to his face.

Wong is seeking the Republican nomination in the 56th Assembly District in the June 2 primary. The seat is held by Democrat Bob Epple.
