Tournament--Thirty-two of the top two-player teams in the nation competing in a double-elimination format at the $50,000 Seal Beach Open.

Site--North side of Seal Beach Pier.

Time--Competition begins Saturday and Sunday at 8 a.m., with the finals tentatively scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Sunday. Admission is free.

Defending champions--Angela Rock and Karolyn Kirby of San Diego. Rock, a former El Toro High standout, and Kirby, the tour’s MVP the past two seasons, defeated Janice Opalinski-Harrer of San Juan Capistrano and Elaine Roque of Malibu in the finals of the Camp Pendleton Open last year. The Camp Pendleton tournament was moved to Seal Beach this year.

Local entries--Cammy Ciarelli (Huntington Beach), Christa Cook (Huntington Beach), Lori Zeno-Biller (Fountain Valley), Alison Johnson (Laguna Beach), Janice Opalinski-Harrer (San Juan Capistrano), Angela Rock (El Toro), Rita Crockett-Royster (Costa Mesa), Gayle Stammer (Laguna Beach).

The schedule--The Seal Beach tournament is the sixth stop on the Women’s Pro Beach Volleyball Assn.’s 18-city tour. It is the only stop in Orange County. Seal Beach is the last stop before the Las Vegas shootout May 30-31, where the tour’s top eight teams will compete for a $50,000 purse.

Noteworthy--Kirby and Rock, who won a record 12 tournaments last season, continue to dominate the tour this season. They have reached the finals in the past four tournaments, winning three, including last week at Fresno. . . . Linda Chisholm-Carrillo of Van Nuys and Liz Masakayan of Redondo Beach have won the other two tournaments. . . . Jackie Silva of Redondo Beach and Patty Dodd of Manhattan Beach, who won the 1989 Huntington Beach Open, placed third at the Fresno Open last weekend. . . . The Assn. of Volleyball Professionals men’s tour will stop at the Seal Beach Pier Aug. 14-15.
