SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Mission Viejo got more than revenge against Marina in the second round of the Southern Section 4-A tennis playoffs Thursday in Huntington Beach.

The Diablos established a school record for victories in a season, 17, with a 14-4 victory over the Vikings and also earned a berth in Tuesday’s quarterfinals.

Mission Viejo (17-4), runner-up in the South Coast League, will meet third-seeded University at a site to be determined.

Earlier this season, Sunset League champion Marina (20-2) defeated the then-injury-depleted Diablos, 12-6, in a nonleague match at Mission Viejo. But Thursday, Mission Viejo was at full strength and was never threatened in the match.

“In our league, we played a lot of tough teams and I felt we could beat (Marina) if we were healthy,” Mission Viejo Coach Bill Smith said. “Beating them at their place in the playoffs makes it even better.”

Marina entered the match 20-1, but hadn’t faced the level of competition Mission Viejo had. Marina’s only loss before Thursday was to Dana Hills, which finished fourth in the South Coast League.

The Diablos opened a 4-2 lead after one rotation and nearly clinched the match before the teams reached the third round. Mission Viejo won five of six sets in the second round to take a 9-3 lead and secured the match early in the third round when No. 1 singles player Jeff Holroyd defeated Ryan Lipson, 6-2, for the Diablos’ 10th set.

In other Division 4-A matches:

Corona del Mar 14, Westlake 4--David Bain and Brian Walden each won all three of their singles sets and the Sea Kings (17-4) took eight of nine doubles sets at Westlake (19-2).

Trenton Rhodes defaulted all three of his sets because of disciplinary reasons. His status for Tuesday’s match against San Clemente, an 11-7 winner at Beverly Hills, is uncertain.
