BASEBALL DAILY REPORT : ANGELS : Rodgers, in Pain, to Remain in Hospital

Share

Angel Manager Buck Rodgers had a new cast put on his surgically repaired right elbow Friday and was in sufficient pain to persuade doctors to keep him at Centinela Hospital through the weekend and probably until next Tuesday.

Rodgers, whose condition has been officially upgraded to good, has begun rehabilitation exercises. However, his mobility is severely limited because of the shattered right elbow and fractured left knee he suffered in the May 21 bus accident that injured 12 members of the Angels’ traveling party as they rode from New York to Baltimore.

Interim Manager John Wathan said he and Rodgers discussed Thursday’s roster move--placing Junior Felix on the 15-day disabled list and activating Lance Parrish from the DL--but said Rodgers was too uncomfortable to talk for long. Having his surgical dressings and cast changed increased his pain. “He wasn’t a happy camper,” Wathan said.

Shortstop Gary DiSarcina sat out Friday’s game because of a bruised left foot, sustained Thursday when he fouled a ball off the inside of the foot for the third time in a week. X-rays showed no fractures or breaks. “You’d think after I did it a couple of times, I’d wear padding,” said DiSarcina, who had missed only one other game this season, on April 9. “I think I’ll make the adjustment now.”

Todd Blyleven, son of Angel pitcher Bert Blyleven and a onetime star at Villa Park High School, is eagerly awaiting Monday’s free-agent draft. Todd was drafted by the Angels two years agao and the Dodgers last year but instead chose to go to college. After playing at Oklahoma and Cypress College, he figures he’s ready for the pros. “I’d like to sign right away,” said Todd, who has a scholarship to Fresno State if he’s not drafted by a team he wants to play for.

The Angels pick eighth in Monday’s draft and will have six of the first 78 picks. Their top selection last year, Eduardo Perez, is hitting .315 for Class-A Palm Springs and might be promoted to double-A Midland, according to Bill Bavasi, the Angels’ director of minor league operations. Perez had three home runs and 22 runs batted in in 35 games through Thursday.

Early Nolan Ryan alert: if the Texas Rangers stick to their five-man rotation, as they have so far, Ryan would face the Angels June 17 at Anaheim Stadium. He is scheduled to have his Angel number, 30, retired in ceremonies on June 16. . . . The Indians put third baseman Jim Thome on the disabled list because of a sore right shoulder and activated first baseman Carlos Martinez.
