Things have been happening quickly for David Eggert, who started the past baseball season in the bullpen for Cal State Northridge and ended it as a mainstay in the Matadors’ starting rotation.

Tuesday morning Eggert was wondering when--and if--he might be selected in the amateur baseball draft. By midafternoon he was a Montreal Expo, and making plans to attend a minicamp in West Palm Beach, Fla., before heading to Jamestown, N.Y., and the Expos’ affiliate in the Class-A New York-Penn League.

Terms of Eggert’s contract were not released. A senior left-hander, Eggert was selected in the 21st round. He was 8-3 this season with a 2.83 earned-run average and 74 strikeouts in 86 innings.

Teammate Kenny Kendrena, meanwhile, was a 28th-round choice of the Florida Marlins. A senior right-hander, Kendrena had a 3.11 ERA, a team-high 11 wins and 176 strikeouts in 162 innings.

Several college players with ties to the region also were drafted.

Brian Eldridge, an All-American infielder at Oklahoma and a Monroe High product, was selected in the 12th round by the Oakland A’s. Teammate Jason Evans, a former standout shortstop at Chatsworth High, was drafted in the 12th round by the Chicago White Sox.

Steve Sisco of Cal State Fullerton and Thousand Oaks High was drafted in the 16th round by the Kansas City Royals. Mark Skeels, a senior catcher from Stanford and Sisco’s former teammate at Thousand Oaks, was drafted in the 18th round by the Marlins.

Notre Dame High product Jeff Antoon of UC Santa Barbara was taken in the 28th round by the Royals and Robby Welles, who clubbed a school-record 14 homers for Pierce, was drafted in the 17th round by the San Francisco Giants.

Shortstop Chris Chandler of Moorpark College was a 28th-round pick of the Toronto Blue Jays.
