A congressional committee has approved construction projects totaling $14.3 million at the Naval Construction Battalion Center at Port Hueneme, a base spokeswoman said Friday.

The House Appropriations Committee on Thursday approved requests to build a $9-million barracks for enlisted personnel and a $5.3-million storage facility for hazardous and flammable waste at the base, public affairs officer Linda Wadley said.

The barracks will be a 6,700-square-foot, three-story facility housing 286 enlisted personnel, Wadley said.

The hazardous and flammable materials storehouse is planned as a 28,300-square-foot building with built-in material handling equipment and separate storage for gas cylinders, she said.

The two projects, scheduled for construction during the fiscal year beginning Oct. 1, were included in a military construction funding bill approved by the committee, said John Frith, aide to Rep. Elton Gallegly (R-Simi Valley).

The bill must still be passed by a vote of the entire House, Frith said.
