Arraignment of Brea Mayor Delayed for Second Time

Share

The arraignment of Mayor Ronald E. Isles was postponed Thursday for the second time this month after his attorney told a municipal judge that he needed still more time to complete discovery proceedings in the case.

Municipal Judge John W. McOwen rescheduled the arraignment for July 9 after Isles’ attorney, Thomas Avdeef, said he had not yet read all 2,600 pages of paperwork provided by the prosecution in the case.

Isles was charged on May 19 with 21 criminal misdemeanor counts. The charges allege that he violated state conflict-of-interest laws by casting votes on issues involving a longtime business partner and that he failed to disclose millions of dollars in loans and other financial interests.

Isles was originally scheduled to be arraigned June 18. If convicted, he could face six months in jail and maximum fines of $10,000 per count.

Isles has served on the City Council since 1988 and was appointed mayor last December. He was not present in court Thursday.
