The Simi Valley City Council has approved the release of $241,350 in community block grants to 14 social service groups.

The council this week allocated $34,800 to a coalition of Simi Valley church groups that plans to establish a drop-in center for the homeless and $30,000 to the Youth Connection of Ventura County for the development of a youth crisis center in Camarillo.

Ventura County Superior Court Judge Joe Hadden, a strong advocate of the youth center, told the council that the 60-bed facility will provide services to abused, neglected and abandoned children in the county.

The City Council also allocated $15,000 to the Simi Valley Boys and Girls Club to be used to purchase a van; $10,000 to the Simi Valley Free Clinic to help in relocation to a larger facility, and $10,000 to the Wellness Community in Thousand Oaks, which provides counseling services to recovering cancer patients countywide.

Every year, Simi Valley receives grant money from the U. S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. The money is intended primarily to benefit low- and moderate-income people or meet an urgent community-development need, city officials said.
