A former Exxon security officer and his wife were formally indicted in Newark, N.J., on charges of kidnaping Exxon International President Sidney Reso as officials said they were getting discouraged in their hunt for the missing executive. Arthur and Irene Seale, both 45, were indicted by a federal grand jury on charges that they kidnaped Reso on April 29, tried to extort $18.5 million from Exxon, used the mails to send extortion letters and crossed state lines to advance their plot. The 57-year-old executive was on his way to work when he disappeared from his New Jersey home.
