LOS ANGELES : LAPD Urged to Ban Police Hiding of Badge Numbers
Civil libertarians called Monday on the Los Angeles Police Department to order officers to display their badges on their uniforms.
The American Civil Liberties Union-Southern California said that gay rights protesters have been assaulted by officers but could not identify them because of concealed badges.
“In some instances . . . we believe that officers selected persons for beating as a result of these individuals verbally stating an intention to take note of the officers’ badge numbers or names,” the ACLU said in a letter to the Police Department.
Police officials declined to comment because the allegation of concealed badges is contained in lawsuits claiming police brutality.
