Children’s Bureau Raises $300,000

The Children’s Bureau of Southern California will receive more than $300,000, proceeds raised at a Cirque du Soleil benefit performance in Santa Monica on Oct. 11. The event, hosted by the League for Children, was underwritten by National Medical Enterprises. The money will provide services for abused and battered children. Eileen Eamer was benefit chairwoman.

Junior League of Los Angeles held its “Under Western Stars” fund-raiser Oct. 17 at the Warner Bros. Studios back lot. Of the $80,000 raised, $1,300 came from the auction of the hat Clint Eastwood wore in “Unforgiven.” Proceeds will be used for league projects: Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention Education, Caring for Babies with AIDS, Hands on the Environment and Windows to the World.

The Fashion Industries Guild raised $305,000 for Cedars-Sinai Medical Center’s Pediatric AIDS Program at its annual banquet and dance Oct. 10 at the Regent Beverly Wilshire. Jon Bernstein, guild president and board chairman, was the evening’s honoree.

San Fernando Valley Child Guidance Clinic received a $5,000 grant from the Sidney Stern Memorial Trust. The grant will be used to treat child abuse.

The Hospital of the Good Samaritan in downtown Los Angeles has received a $25,000 grant from the American Parkinson’s Disease Assn. The gift will establish a regional information center.

Descanso Gardens Guild, Inc.’s Campaign for the Rose Garden has reached the $1.2-million mark in gifts and pledges (toward a $1.5-million goal). The new International Rosarium will be a themed historical garden with 17 vignettes depicting roses through the centuries. Support includes gifts from the Berger Foundation, the Ralph M. Parsons Foundation and Jackson & Perkins Roses. Groundbreaking was Oct. 1.

The Almansor Center in South Pasadena received a $65,000 donation from the Saul Breton Foundation, part of the proceeds of the annual “Rags for Riches” party given each year by Neil Breton, president of Breton Industries. The center provides programs for infants, youth and young adults with learning, emotional and behavioral problems.

Women Helping Children raised $10,000 at a Sept. 15 buffet supper and fashion show underwritten by Nordstrom at the Westside Pavilion. WHC sponsors programs to improve the quality of life for underprivileged children and teen-agers through the Teen Mother Literacy Project, the Childlife Program at Childrens Hospital and other services.

Hollywood Sunset Free Clinic was the recipient of a $60,000 grant from the Ralph M. Parsons Foundation to support the clinic’s renovation and expansion project. The new structure will house its Cara a Cara Latino AIDS Project, HIV Mental Health Department, administrative offices and new programs.

Friendly House, a nonprofit privately funded home for women in recovery from alcohol and drug dependency, raised $58,000 at its Sept. 26 annual award luncheon at the Beverly Hilton. Honorees were Carrie Fisher and Linda Ellerbee. Beverly Sassoon was chairwoman.
