I think Hilburn misses the point. There are a lot of people, along with O’Connor, who believe that the discussion of the Roman Catholic Church and its hard-line stance on controversial social issues is a worthwhile and important subject. That, however, isn’t why people are so upset. It is the way O’Connor chose to provoke this discussion. Standing before a live TV audience saying, “Fight the real enemy,” then tearing up a picture of the Pope isn’t the way you get people to start talking about tolerance.
