Anaheim Quarterback Covarrubias Reigns for a Night
There was the thunder and lightning and rain. And then there was Phil Covarrubias.
Magnolia (0-7, 0-2) could cope with the first three elements, but the Sentinels couldn’t weather the storm created by Covarrubias, Anaheim’s senior quarterback. He led the Colonists (6-1, 2-0) to a 42-0 Orange League victory before a homecoming crowd Friday night at Glover Stadium.
Covarrubias, who played only the first half, completed five of six passes for 136 yards and three touchdowns.
It didn’t take long for Anaheim to strike.
After a Magnolia punt, Anaheim drove to the Sentinel 29-yard line. From there, Covarrubias passed 29 yards to Gabriel Alcala for the touchdown. Julio Herrera added the first of six conversion kicks.
Chee Garcia, who rushed for 46 yards in seven carries, scored on a seven-yard run in the first quarter to give Anaheim a 14-0 lead.
Brian Diaz led the Colonists in rushing with 57 yards in eight carries, all in the first half.
Garcia scored the second of his three touchdowns on a three-yard run. Covarrubias then threw a 38-yard scoring pass to Jaime Carlos, and followed that up with a 20-yard strike to Garcia to give Anaheim a 35-0 halftime lead.
Anaheim out-gained Magnolia in total yards in the first half, 247-95.
Dennis McCown led Magnolia with 78 yards rushing in 19 carries. But the night belonged to Covarrubias.
Along with his performance on the field, Covarrubias was also named Homecoming king.
