Baja 1000 Begins From Ensenada
More than 300 off-road vehicles started the 25th annual Baja 1000 off-road race in Ensenada at dawn Thursday.
There were 132 motorcycles and all-terrain vehicles and 174 four-wheel vehicles that departed from downtown in the 1,038-mile race to La Paz. The first finishers were expected to complete the race late Thursday or early today.
There were 56 entries from Japan, 34 from Mexico and 10 from Canada, plus entries from Italy, Belgium, Israel, Great Britain, Germany and Costa Rica.
Competitors have 42 hours to complete the race through 13 checkpoints along the rugged route which zigzags through the Baja Peninsula and finishes on the outskirts of La Paz, at the southern tip of the peninsula.
Weather conditions were ideal with temperatures in the upper 70s and lower 80s on the race route over deserts, mountains and beaches.
