From Staff and Wire Reports

A driver fleeing National City police careened off a Coronado Bridge on-ramp and landed in Chicano Park on Monday morning, officials said.

William Wylie, who is in the Navy, was hospitalized in critical condition, a UC San Diego Medical Center nursing supervisor said.

Police said the driver of a 1992 Mazda nearly hit four pedestrians at Plaza and National City boulevards, then sped off when police attempted to pull him over.

The Mazda, with three patrol cars in pursuit, reached speeds of more than 100 m.p.h. as it approached the Coronado Bridge from northbound Interstate 5, Officer Sharon Davie said.

The Mazda went out of control on the on-ramp but landed on its wheels, Davie said.
