Cal Thomas on Religious Right
You printed two letters (Nov. 16) from religious right adherents wherein they claimed to not be at fault regarding the Republicans’ loss of the presidency. They were not the only reason for the loss, but they must accept their portion of the blame. Religious right followers represent a very small part of the electorate and when they get too much power in a political party, that party will probably lose. They along with the far right can be more aptly described as the lunatic fringe.
But they can take some small heart. The Democratic Party also has a lunatic fringe. They are sometimes called wild-eyed liberals. This lunatic fringe can just as easily contribute to an election loss and often has.
Either party must stay in the middle where the majority of the people are and where the elections are won.
