Commenting on the Commentator
I have nothing but respect for commentator Rosemarie Vasquez. I too believe that television news ought to reflect the varied culture to which it allegedly reports.
But it makes my blood boil when persons such as Esther Renteria, head of the National Hispanic Media Coalition, refer to breaking up their “white-bread look.” The condescending implication, of course, is that anything non-ethnic is devoid of substance, cultural significance or anything the slightest bit interesting.
If one were to so narrowly characterize Vasquez, I am certain Renteria would be the first to balk. Why do we always have to be prejudiced to fight prejudice?
