Face It: San Francisco Doesn’t Want Giants
Ross Newhan’s analysis of the Giants’ situation was wide of the mark. If Los Angeles was being asked to come up with $200 million in public funds to build a new baseball stadium, instead of enjoying the use of one constructed with private funds, I believe his attitude would have been considerably different.
What is the yardstick for deserving to keep a team? San Diego, despite a beautiful climate and being a one-team city, has been outdrawn by the Giants many times. Does Pittsburgh not deserve the Pirates because they didn’t sell out for the playoffs? What about the two New York teams that combined drew fewer fans than the Orioles?
