Garcia Watches Diaz Run as Anaheim Routs Walnut

The outfit didn’t match the occasion.

It looked as if Anaheim running back Che Garcia--decked out in street clothes--was going to a dance.

Garcia, sidelined with a broken collarbone, probably would have liked to show some of his steps on the football field, but instead was a bystander as the Colonists (9-2) shut out Walnut, 28-0, Friday night at Anaheim High in the opening round of the Division VI playoffs.

Anaheim will play Duarte (10-0), a 38-0 winner over Covina Northview, next Friday.

Walnut (8-3) probably wished Anaheim fullback Brian Diaz had shown up in street clothes too . . . or not at all.

Diaz, held to 29 yards last week, rushed for 157 yards in 30 carries and scored on a 19-yard run. He had 62 yards in the first quarter.

Steve Lopez caught a five-yard scoring pass from Phil Covarrubias to give Anaheim a 14-0 halftime lead. Julio Herrera scored the other two Anaheim touchdowns on two-yard runs. Herrera also kicked the four conversions.

“We had three plays we were going to run and all we had to do was execute,” Anaheim Coach Todd Borowski said.

And for Anaheim, it was as simple as 1-2-3.
