After years of losing, the San Diego Chargers have their heads above water.

Ronnie Harmon scored two touchdowns as the Chargers beat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, 29-14, on Sunday to improve their record to 6-5--the first time they’ve been above .500 since 1987.

“It doesn’t matter whether I score,” said Harmon, who got his first touchdowns of the season. “We’ve all been working hard and it’s paying off. It’s getting exciting around here.”

San Diego won for the sixth time in seven games after an 0-4 start.

The Chargers sacked Vinny Testaverde a season-high six times and dealt the Buccaneers (4-7) their sixth loss in seven games. Testaverde completed 19 of 31 passes for 187 yards and one touchdown.

“We are a contender for the playoffs; I’m not afraid to say it,” cornerback Gill Byrd said.

Testaverde scored on a one-yard run 1:32 into the fourth quarter to get Tampa Bay to cut the deficit to 22-14, but San Diego’s Stan Humphries scored the clinching touchdown on a four-yard bootleg with 1:12 left.

Humphries completed 13 of 28 passes for 126 yards, and Marion Butts rushed 22 times for 104 yards.
