HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL : Vista’s Long Shots Enough to Beat Rancho Bernardo

Vista High School overcame a four-point halftime deficit with some impressive long-range shooting in the third quarter to beat Rancho Bernardo, 97-85, in the third round of the Panther Tipoff Classic at Vista.

The Panthers (2-1) made five consecutive three-point baskets and six in seven possessions to go from four points down to two points ahead entering the fourth quarter. The Panthers scored 65 points in the second half as they wore down the Broncos, who played with only seven players: two had the flu, one had a sprained ankle and another is academically ineligible.

Matt Jager scored 16 of Vista’s 34 third-quarter points and finished with 33. Shane Jager finished with 26 and Caleb Ashley had 15.

In other Tipoff tournament games:

Ramona 75, Riverside La Sierra 73--Forward Dave Prosfancik’s basket with one second left lifted the Bulldogs to 2-2, 2-1 in the tournament. Rusty Hoss had 19 to lead Ramona. Jerrod Bess added 15.

Third round, pool play

Fresno Christian 82, Tri-City Christian 25--Fresno jumped out to a 32-7 lead at halftime and did not slow down as it outscored Tri-City, 31-13, in the third quarter. Senior forwards Matt Rines (24 points) and Paul McEntee (17) led the way for Fresno, 3-0 in the tournament.

Top Flight Academy 85, Marian 84--Marian had control of this game until the fourth quarter, when Top Flight of Salt Lake City outscored the Patriots, 30-21. Adam Vigil scored 22 and led five Top Flight scorers in double figures.

Rincon Valley Christian 76, Francis Parker 74--The visitors from Santa Rosa outscored Parker 24-15 in the third quarter. Eddie Gerard score 26 and Scott Schneider had 14 for Parker (4-3).

Norseman-Warhawk Tournament

Serra 76, Madison 56--Kendrick Johnson scored 24 points, Gerald Hunter 20 as the Conquistadors breezed after outscoring the host team, 20-4, in the second quarter.

Rancho Buena Vista 70, La Jolla 54--Isaac Hilker scored 23 points and Dan Curran had 21 to lead RBV (3-1) over La Jolla, which got 25 from Ken Kavanagh.

Bronco Invitational

Poway 61, Mt. Carmel 35--Kara Milling scored 17 points and Jamie Shadian had 15 to lift Poway (2-0) into tonight’s 8 p.m. championship game against Rancho Bernardo.

Carlsbad 57, Bonita Vista 46--Renee Demirjian scored 14, Sarah Pavich 13 and Holly Gerdes 11 to lift Carlsbad (1-1) into the consolation championship against Mission Bay (4:15 p.m.).

Mission Bay 58, Temecula Valley 44--Kristen Grebing scored 22 and Adia Barnes had 20 to lift Mission Bay (1-1). Jill Burningham had 14 for Temecula Valley.
