BOYS’ BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Capistrano Valley’s Thornton Ties County 3-Point Record in Florida

Todd Thornton made nine three-pointers, tying an Orange County record, and scored 30 points to lead Capistrano Valley to an 89-73 victory over Savannah (Ga.) in the first round of the Kissimmee Great Florida Shootout boys’ basketball tournament Saturday.

Thornton’s nine three-pointers tied the county’s single-game record set by Rich Hughes of Huntington Beach in 1987 and equaled by Tom Airey of Capistrano Valley in 1991.

Thornton also broke the tournament record of seven, previously held by Denver Nugget guard Chris Jackson.

Jackson, who starred at Louisiana State from ‘88-90, set the record in 1987 while at Gulfport (Miss.) High.

Corey Kost scored 24 points, and David Sedgwick added 13 points and 16 assists for the Cougars (6-1), who advanced to Monday’s second round to play Boca Ciega (Fla.).

In the Arroyo-Grande tournament:

Santa Margarita 68, Victor Valley 45--Bobby Nolan scored 12 points to lead a balanced scoring attack, as Santa Margarita (6-1) cruised to the tournament championship for the third year in a row.

Adam Dzierzynki and Bryan Young each had 11 points for the Eagles.

Brian Finneran and Kevin Lewis each had 10.

In the La Verne Damien tournament:

Hacienda Heights Wilson 73, El Dorado 51--Dan Watson scored 22 points for El Dorado (3-6) in the fifth-place game.

In the Maui Invitational

Los Alamitos 67, Maui Baldwin 58--Steven Carbone scored 24 points for Los Alamitos (9-2) in a semifinal victory.

In the San Dieguito boys’ basketball tournament:

Trabuco Hills 64, Fallbrook 58--Brett Poulos scored 19 points and Ryan Karnoff added 13 for Trabuco Hills (7-2) in the second-round game.

Newport Harbor 44, Oceanside 33--Eric Vallely scored 17 points for Newport Harbor (4-2) in a consolation game.

In the San Jose Valley Christian tournament:

Capistrano Valley Christian 75, Sacramento Capital 44--Troy Rodarmel had 38 points and eight rebounds for Capistrano Valley Christian (7-1) in the third-place game.
