Children’s Home Society

I wish to thank Victor Merina and The Times for the Dec. 6 article on Children’s Home Society of California and James T. Spradley Jr., the CEO. At last the board of directors of CHS will have to face up to their responsibility and deal with the alleged actions of Spradley and his key staff.

I left the CHS board in November of 1987, having been the president of that board in 1983 and 1984. From the time Spradley became executive director and then president/CEO, I questioned his management of the agency, his treatment of certain staff and his control of the board. It would appear my concerns were justified.

As a volunteer with CHS for more than 30 years, I know firsthand the wonderful work of the agency, the volunteers and the majority of the staff. I am angry that the dictatorial and high-handed actions of Spradley and his associates have damaged the reputation of a fine organization.
