OUTLOOK It’s the year of change for the Patriots. They have a new league, the Express, and a new coach, Shirey. They also have some new things to learn. “This team, we’ve had to teach them how to dribble,” Shirey said. “We’re just at the beginning. But I’m having success. These girls do what I say. Our biggest thing is to teach them to play instinctive basketball.” Since the Patriots aren’t the biggest team around, Shirey, who used to coach in Houston, is teaching the Patriots to run. “We’re going to have to depend on our speed,” Shirey said. “So we’re running the ball.” Spearheading the running game is point guard Larson. “She’s quick and an excellent ballhandler,” Shirey said. “She’s a good shooter from the outside, also.” If Larson doesn’t shoot, the Patriots will try to get the ball inside to Kean. Depth is a problem the Patriots may not overcome. “Our biggest problem is we don’t have much to come off the bench.” While Shirey expected this to be just a season of learning, the Patriots posted their first victory this week, topping Riverside Christian, 40-28. “It was exciting to see them play good basketball,” Shirey said. “It’s coming.”
