OUTLOOK There are programs going through rebuilding phases, but at Southern California Christian, first-year Coach Townsend is practically starting from scratch. The Flames have not won an Arrowhead League game since the 1990-91 season, a stretch of 22 games, and only two games in all in that span. And the prospects of making a breakthrough this season are not great. “I have a lot of freshmen (five on the 11-player roster) and I want them to learn how to play,” said Townsend, who was a center at Biola and a prep standout at Dillingham (Alaska) High. “Some of the girls have played pickup games, but they need to polish their skills. My goal is for them to conquer the basics--how to dribble, how to pass, how to shoot.” Until they grasp the basics, Townsend said the Flames will depend on Santelli, Fetters and Silva to carry the load. “We are trying to build an offense around the abilities of my seniors and Silva,” Townsend said. “Angie and Candle are the outside shooters. Candle is real versatile. She can go inside or outside. She can also function as a guard because she can dribble the ball.” Even though the offense will take time to develop, Townsend said the defense is coming along fine. “We don’t have a problem with defense,” she said. “They work hard and hustle. They are real aggressive. Our offense is our problem. That’s where my focus is.”
