VENTURA : Coast Panel to Consider RV Park Restrictions

Share

The California Coastal Commission is scheduled today to consider how long campers may stay at the Ventura Beach RV Resort, which sits in a flood plain at the mouth of the Ventura River.

The Ventura City Council last year decided that long-term stays should be limited to a maximum of nine months. That decision has been appealed to the Coastal Commission by the League of Women Voters and the Environmental Coalition of Ventura County, whose members say that because the park is located in a flood plain, no long-term stays should be allowed.

“I think it’s harassment,” said Nancy Hubbard, owner of the park at 800 W. Main St.

After the park was flooded in February of last year, city officials became concerned that some long-term residents had neglected to keep their vehicles in operating condition, making them unable to evacuate the park quickly.

In the storms that flooded the 19-acre RV park, one homeless man living in the nearby river bottom drowned and about 40 recreational vehicles were damaged or destroyed.

The Coastal Commission is a state regulatory agency responsible for overseeing coastal development throughout California.
