Group Says 11 Billion Gallons of Oil Wasted: Washington-based Friends of the Earth released a report saying that U.S. industry annually wastes 1,000 times the oil spilled in the 1989 Exxon Valdez disaster. The report, “Crude Awakening,” cited oil-field spills, leaky wells, faulty storage tanks and other problems. The American Petroleum Institute countered: “It is inconceivable that firms which attempt to make a profit would simply spill and waste oil with a value equal to nearly twice their net income.” However, the Associated Press reported that an official of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the report’s findings sounded consistent with agency data.
