LOS ANGELES : Judge Refuses to Accept Deadlock in Officer’s Trial

Share

Jurors said Monday that they were deadlocked in the trial of a Los Angeles police officer accused of conspiring to rob a chain of check-cashing stores, but the judge told them to continue their work.

After nearly two days of deliberations and five ballots, the Los Angeles Superior Court panel announced that it was deadlocked in the trial of Bobby Rydell Marshall.

Judge George Trammell refused to declare a mistrial. But if he does so, it will be the second time a jury has deadlocked on charges against the LAPD Southwest Division officer.

Marshall and his wife, Carolyn Payne-Marshall, were indicted in March, 1992, for allegedly conspiring with another man to rob two Any Kind Check Cashing Store outlets in 1989.

Last August, a Superior Court jury acquitted Payne-Marshall on several counts and deadlocked in favor of acquitting the officer and his wife on the remaining charges.
