Field trips, hiking outings and painting projects are among the summer activities planned for children ages 8 to 14 at El Centro de Amistad community center in Canoga Park.

The activities, tentatively scheduled to begin July 1 and run for six weeks, will be offered for free or at low cost, depending on availability of funds, center officials said.

Ramona Fuentes, a community educator at the center, said El Centro de Amistad is accepting donations to subsidize this summer’s events.

“We’re trying to make it so that the kids don’t have to pay,” she said.

Fuentes said trips tentatively planned include educational field trips to colleges and universities, recreational outings to local amusement parks such as Magic Mountain, and wilderness camping and hiking excursions.

She said a community beautification project, in which children will cover graffiti-marred walls with colorful murals, is also planned.

“We are trying to have a little something for everyone,” Fuentes said.
