Inmate Captured Soon After Escape

A man jailed for auto theft escaped from jail but was captured a short time later while walking along a Castaic street, Los Angeles County authorities said Monday.

Anthony Spanier, 34, slipped out of a minimum-security facility at the Peter J. Pitchess Honor Rancho between 7 and 10 p.m. Sunday, Sheriff’s Deputy Gabe Ramirez said.

Spanier was last seen during an inmate count, but three hours later “he was nowhere to be found,” Ramirez said. It was unclear how Spanier escaped.

Deputies launched a search and found Spanier about 10:40 p.m. walking in the 30000 block of The Old Road on the west side of the Golden State Freeway. He was arrested without incident.

Ramirez said Spanier was arrested May 5 on a grand theft auto warrant issued by the Long Beach Municipal Court. He was to be released Oct. 19, but will be charged with escape and probably will serve more time, Ramirez said.
