DOWNTOWN : Central Library Closed for Move
The Los Angeles Central Library will be closed for four months while materials are moved from its temporary Spring Street site back to the restored building at 5th and Flower streets.
The library will be closed until Oct. 3, when a grand reopening celebration is scheduled at the restored building, which was damaged in a $22-million arson fire in 1986.
Meanwhile, movers will transfer 2.1 million books and about 2,700 drawers of microfilm and microfiche from the temporary Spring Street facility.
The administrative offices, now at 548 S. Spring, will also return to the restored building, as will materials stored in warehouses. Relocation will be done by William B. Meyer Inc., a Connecticut moving company, and will cost about $500,000, said Joan Bartel, assistant central library director.
Patrons can return checked-out materials to a book drop at the entrance of the Spring Street site or to any of the 63 branch libraries throughout the city, Bartel said.
The library staff will operate an information and referral line Monday through Friday, from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.: (213) 612-3200.
